The early years 1896 to 1929

Bernard Zakheim at 15 years of age

 

When Bernard Zakheim was born in Warsaw Poland in 1896 his family expected that he would become a Rabbi instead he became a great artist.  He was recognized as a talented artist by the time that he was fifteen. When he was seventeen he received a grant of a free large fully equipped art studio.

He was captured by the Germans and was put in a
prison camp; however he escaped several times,
each time he returned to his art studies.

After his last escape he made his way to the city
of Danzig (Gdansk} where he studied with well
known Polish artist Enrico Glichtenstien.

   

 

 

His sweetheart Eda joined him in Danzig, where they got married

They settled in San Francisco where Bernard started a successful custom furniture manufacturing company.   He became a wealthy business owner in America.
